Viola Hanging Basket

Hanging baskets are not just for the Spring and Summer gardens, they can also be utlized in the Fall and Winter too! This was new for me last year but I absolutely loved having flowers in the hanging basket all season long.

Not all of us can grow violas all winter long, but if you can they are a perfect plant for a hanging basket. Violas grow well in containers, and while they benefit from deadheading they are pretty forgiving when it comes to care. If you are in a US zone 3-9 violas should grow well for you.

So if you are looking for blooms this winter! Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • Violas

  • Pick any kind or color that suits your garden. I love brush strokes and tiger eye if you are starting yours from seed.

Directions:

Plant in a 14 inch hanging basket or bigger! I don’t fertilize mine as much as I do in the growing season. So I am for about monthly with a water soluble fertilizer.

*Watering is very hard in coco fiber lined containers and this container will start to need lots of water as the season goes on. I water by placing the hanging basket in a tube with a couple inches of water. I let it soak for a few hours and it has helped a lot to keep the container hydrated!
